  • Rising Energy Imbalance: The amount of heat trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere has more than doubled since the 1980s, driven by an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Accelerating Warming: The rate of global warming is accelerating, with surface temperatures now rising at about 0.27°C per decade, nearly 50% faster than in the 1990s and 2000s.
  • Breaching the 1.5°C Target: At the current rate of emissions, the planet is on track to breach the 1.5°C global warming target from the Paris Agreement by 2028.
  • Accelerating Sea-Level Rise: Global sea levels are also rising at an accelerating rate. The average rate over the past decade (4.5 millimeters per year) is more than double the rate since the early 20th century.
  • A Glimmer of Hope: The report notes that while the 1.5°C target is likely to be missed, the more ambitious 2°C target remains within reach. It also suggests that global emissions may be nearing their peak.
