- Louisiana health officials have confirmed that two more people have died and at least 22 others have been hospitalized from a flesh-eating bacteria known as Vibrio vulnificus.
- The new cases bring the state’s total death count from the bacteria to four so far this year.
- The bacteria is naturally found in warm coastal waters and in raw or undercooked seafood.
- The two most recent deaths were linked to the consumption of raw oysters.
- About one-in-five people who get the infection and need hospitalization ultimately die, sometimes within 24 hours of becoming sick.
