- Solar Leads EU Electricity: For the first time, solar became the EU’s largest source of electricity in June 2025, generating 22.1% (45.4 TWh) of the total, a 22% year-over-year increase.
- National Solar Records: At least thirteen EU countries, including Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Slovenia, and Romania, achieved their highest-ever monthly solar generation.
- Strong Wind Performance: Wind power reached all-time high generation shares for May (16.6% or 33.7 TWh) and June (15.8% or 32.4 TWh), driven by improved conditions and continuous capacity growth.
- Coal at Record Low: As a direct result of high renewables generation, coal’s share of EU electricity dropped to an all-time low of 6.1% (12.6 TWh) in June.
- Country-Specific Coal Declines: Germany and Poland, accounting for 79% of EU coal power, both saw record lows in June (Germany 12.4%, Poland 42.9%). Four other countries (Czechia, Bulgaria, Denmark, Spain) also hit their lowest monthly coal generation.
- Overall Fossil Fuels: Total fossil generation in June was low at 23.6%, just above the record low of May 2024. However, fossil generation for the first half of 2025 was 13% higher annually, mainly due to a 19% jump in gas generation.
- Drivers of Fossil Fuel Increase (H1 2025): The increase in fossil fuel use in the first half of the year was attributed to lower hydropower (due to drought) and weaker wind generation compared to the previous year, alongside increasing electricity demand.
- Future Opportunity: Analysts emphasize the need for battery storage and flexibility to extend renewable power into peak demand times (mornings and evenings) to further displace fossil fuels.
- Electricity Demand Growth: EU electricity demand continued to rise, consuming 1.31 PWh in the first half of 2025, a 2.2% increase from the same period last year.
