Wastewater from Tyson Meat Processing Plants is Polluting U.S. Waterways, Report

A new report by the Union of Concerned Scientists alleges Tyson Foods, one of the world’s biggest meat producers, is a major polluter in the United States.

  • The report, titled “Waist Deep,” claims Tyson plants dumped over 371 million pounds of pollutants into U.S. waterways between 2018 and 2022.
  • More than half of this pollution occurred in Nebraska, Illinois, and Missouri.
  • The pollutants include nitrogen, ammonia, phosphorus, bacteria like E. coli, and blood and feces from processing.
